Attack of the Car Wash Cafe!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reading.

Today i was tasked with cleaning up the mess left by a cheap car wash cafe cut and polish. As you will see in the befores the person that completed the work had no skill in using a polisher at all. They have used an aggressive compound that left a huge number of marks in the paint.

I performed a Double Stage Enhancement to attempt to get most of the marks out. I'm proud to say it worked! There are still some swirls remaining in the paint but you have to look for them now, whereas before they smacked you in the face as you walked past.

It makes me sad that people think its acceptable to do this to people's pride and joy!!

Anyway enjoy the pics and as always comments and questions are welcome.

Dirty Dirty Stuff

Hey Guys and Girls,

Occasionally i get somewhat criticised for being a glamour detailer. A detailer that only works on the outside of newish cars so will always get a good finish. Unfortunately this is not true (my job would be eaiser if it was)!

So I've decided to share the less glamorous side of detailing with you.

First up we have the interior of a Holden Calais. The owner was a lovely lady that took in stray dogs. Unfortunately the dogs went with her in the car.

I opened the door to this:

My first impression was WOW that's a lot of hair! No problem I'll just brush it out and vac it up. Once I had brushed it out of the carpet, which took about 15mins per side I was left with this:

There is some dog vomit there and some mud and who knows what else.
Anyway the job must go on. I removed the hair and was left with this:

I then pre-treated all the stains and vomit before shampooing the area. The shampooing deep cleans the area and removes all the stains and their associated odours. Once finished we get this:

All areas of the floor looked like that. The seats were quite dirty as well. This is a before of one of the seats:

and the after:

Possibly the best thing about this job was the smell removal. At the beginning the car smelt horrible but once finished all the odours were gone and it smelt fresh and new.

This next one was an engine clean up as part of a pre-sale detail. The owner needed the car to look great for the sale so asked me what I could with it.

After:

The bumpers were very neglected due to getting the car washed at car wash cafes. A caustic cleaner was used at some stage that had damaged the bumper. I gave it an intensive clean and then dressed it to try and get it looking new again. The results speak for themselves.

Hope you enjoyed the less glamorous side!

DMS Roadtrip: Canberra

Hi guys and girls,

Last weekend DMS went on the road to Canberra with help from my detailer friend Greg. We have done this twice before, and is proving to be a great way to reach those people I can't reach on a daily basis. The jobs are all organised in advance, so we can schedule our time away accordingly.

This installment we were down there for 3 days, and here is the result.

Porsche Carrera - After

This car was very well looked after, and had very few marks in it because the owner rarely drives it. I decided to give it a Stage One to remove the very small marks that were present, and to bring the gloss up. We finished it in a single layer of synthetic sealant for long-lasting protection, and the owner is going to top it with Dodo Supernatural to bring the finish up to a nice high gloss.

Porsche Cayenne - After

Being black and driven daily, this car had quite a few marks throughout the paint. Being Porsche paint, it's of very good quality, but is very hard to correct due to the hardness of the finish. The name for that is called a 'ceramiclear finish'. On this car I used the brand new rotary from Festool, which has not yet been released to the market. I was lucky enough to score the demo machine, thanks to car care products (www.carcareproducts.com.au). It's called the Festool Shinex.

This is me using the Shinex on the Cayenne. The Shinex is a great machine, previously I was using the Festool Pollux 180. In comparison the Shinex is so much easier to use as it is half the weight and accepts 150mm pads which makes it much easier to control.
It was finished in Duragloss 601 then topped in 105 which produced some great gloss and reflections.
After completed, there were some marks still left which were actually under the clearcoat, as sections of the car had been resprayed. (Note: For those who don't know, the clearcoat is the very top layer of paint on a vehicle).

Porsche 911 Turbo Drop-Top - After

This car was also very well looked after, just like the 911 Carrera. It came from the same place as the previous two Porsches we had the pleasure of working on. The silver paint was in good condition, but seemed to lack that little bit of 'wow'.
We gave it a Stage One to bring the gloss right up, and then sealed it in a synthetic sealant called Z2 Pro. The owner will also top this car with Dodo Supernatural which will give this light car great depth.

BMW 730i - Before

This is how the BM looked as we approached. The owner mentioned that the car hadn't been washed for 6 years, so upon approach I was pleasantly surprised at how white it was. I figured he may have been exaggerating to me. Upon closer inspection, we realised the white was not the paint at all ...

As you can see, the 'white' was actually early morning Canberra frost, which slowly started to melt away the longer we stayed. The interesting thing was it had been in the sun for an hour and a half already - just goes to show how cold it gets down there!!
This car was particularly bad, it took us almost as long to wash it as it did to polish. This was because it had so much built up grime due to the fact it lived under a tree before the current owner got his hands on it, and gave it the love it deserved. Unfortunately we did not get any after pictures, as we had to leave for Wagga.

Overall the trip was great fun. We always enjoy going down to Canberra, and we are starting to really look forward to these trips, due in part to the great clients we get to meet and revisit.

Until next time!

DMS Favourites

Hi all!
I thought the best way to kick off my new Blog is to post a few of my favourite jobs so far.

This is a Holden Monaro

This job was a Stage Two. I liked doing this car because it was an interesting colour that had a nice metallic flake when it was in the sun, and gave great reflections once finished.

BMW E46 M3

This is one of my favourite cars. I like the subtle yet aggressive styling especially when combined with a lovely colour like this carbon black. This was also a Stage Two. The paint was nice to work with, and not sticky or soft or hard, it was just right. The two stage worked well, most of the marks came out with the first one, and the second stage brought the gloss right back up.

Audi S5

The Audi is a unique and sporty beast. It was slightly difficult to work with, but in the end achieved stunning results. It had nice metallic flake. I did a Stage Two on it, and got all the marks out. It was actually a new car and when the dealers delivered it to the client it was in poor condition. So being able to rectify that for him was a great feeling of achievement.

HSV Coupe 4

This is a very rare car, which was exciting in itself. I did a Stage Three and topped it with my favourite wax, Dodo Supernatural. I did this car in my workshop space which is part of Piccola Scuderia, my Uncle's Ferrari workshop in Marrickville. It was a stunning result, all the swirl marks were removed.

Renault Clio Sport

This is a nice little car that you don't see many of. Quite a different colour that I don't often get to work with which is enjoyable. The pictures are from a maintenance wash which I did for the client. Lastly I applied a coat of Dodo Supernatural.

VL Group A Commodore Brock Edition

This is a SUPER rare car from 1987, and one of my favourite shaped Commodores. I liked the fact that I was the same age as the car (22)! It was approached differently to other jobs as it was still in original edition so it had old paint which we were trying to preserve as much as possible. As a result, it only received a Stage One detail, because this doesn't really cut into the surface of the paint, it just increases the gloss, which was all that was required. I felt privileged to work on such a car as this, and very happy with the result.

Maserati Gran Sport

There are only four of these cars in the country, so again an extremely rare vehicle. I did a Stage Two, plus a full leather treatment. It was a nice colour, which gave good reflection and depth once complete. This was done at the client's house which overlooked the water, so everytime I looked up from what I was doing, I got views of the ocean. I felt amazed to work on a beautiful car with a beautiful view in the background. A great day of work!

Porsche Boxter

This car was very nice to work with. It's a lovely shape and has lovely curves! It received a Stage Three, again topped in Dodo Supernatural. Being a non-metallic, it gave extremely good reflections. The clarity from the paint, and the depth it gave looked amazing. I did this car inside, but once I took it out into the sun I was even more amazed with the finish.

Holden SS

I drove quite a way to do this job. It was an interesting colour to work with, and working around the stripes was a bit of a challenge. In saying that, in the end I quite enjoyed it. This colour would be one of my favourite colours at the moment in any car. I think this car was modified very well by the owner, the wheels suit is as does the orange stripe on the tires.

Thanks for looking and keep an eye here as its where ill bring you all the latest DMS news and info!
